There is coverage today in the Yorkshire Post, Sky News, ITV News, Farmers Guardian, Farmers Weekly, FarmingUK and on BBC Farming Today on a new report from the RSPB, National Trust and the Wildlife Trusts.
The joint report calls for at least £3 billion to be spent to help farmers restore wildlife and tackle climate change under future farming policy, highlighting that the UK already spends around £3.2 billion a year on both farm income support and environmental payments under the Common Agricultural Policy.
Once we leave the EU on 31 October, we will create an ambitious new system based on paying public money for public goods. This will help our farmers become more profitable while sustaining our precious environment and tackling the effects of climate change.
The new Environmental Land Management (ELM) system will aim to offer land based businesses the opportunity of a meaningful income stream from delivering environmental benefits.
We do not underestimate the scale of the task in implementing the new ELM scheme, which is why we are developing it within a co-design framework, involving a wide range of stakeholders.
The Government has also pledged to continue to commit the same cash total in funds for farm support until the end of this parliament. This includes all funding provided for farm support under both Pillar 1 and Pillar 2 of the current CAP, guaranteeing funding for projects that are approved by the end of 2020, and applies to the whole of the UK.
